Cheryl and I chose to mark October 7 a bit early this year by attending the wedding of Lir and Aviv at Kibbutz Ruchama — the temporary home of Kibbutz Kfar Azza. Both kibbutzim sit along the border with Gaza.

It might sound unusual to honor such a dark day — and the horrific two years since — by attending a simcha. But to dance with Israelis who lived through the terror of that day, to share in their joy, to witness their resilience — it was absolutely sacred. For us, it was the most powerful way to live the slogan our Israeli brothers and sisters have taught us: “We will dance again.” And indeed, they are dancing. We are dancing. We are living.

Of course, the heartache remains unbearable — for the hostages, for their families, for the families of soldiers who have fallen, and for all who lost loved ones on October 7. Gd willing, the latest ceasefire and hostage release plan takes hold quickly, and that the long-awaited liberation of the hostages and true peace will come at last. Kein Yehi Ratzon — May it be Gd’s will.
