The loss of homes, businesses, houses of worship, museums, and schools in Los Angeles – and everything they contain – is unfathomable. It’s shocking. Over the past few days, I’ve heard many say that stuff doesn’t matter. That structures – places we call home, work, our spiritual places – they can be rebuilt. At least people escaped with their lives. There is TRUTH to this. But – our “stuff” and the places that hold our stuff – THEY MATTER. And with the obliteration of this these structures – significant parts of the Torah of people’s lives have been wiped off the face of this earth. And we can’t overlook this. It matters.

I cannot imagine what these people have lost! What these people are going through! This is so much worse than hurricane Andrew in 1992. Amazing and grateful the synagogue is still standing. This reminds me of a synagogue in Miami. After hurricane Andrew, a lot of the sanctuary was damaged, but the Ark and the Torahs were untouched.
