We are closely following the news of yesterday’s attack on Temple Israel in Michigan. We are deeply grateful that trained security personnel on site acted quickly and decisively to stop the attacker and protect the adults and children inside the building. One guard was injured, and I know all of us pray for his speedy recovery.
Moments like this remind us why the Jewish community takes security so seriously.
At RSBI, security guards are present whenever our building is open, and a dedicated Security Committee works tirelessly behind the scenes to help ensure that our synagogue and schools remain safe. We are also fortunate that the Plantation Police Department partners closely with us and is present whenever needed to support the safety of our community. Most of the time, the work of all those who help protect the synagogue is quiet and unnoticed — exactly as it should be. Sometimes people grow frustrated with our security protocols, but yesterday reminds us why they exist and why we take them so seriously.
We all wish for a world in which security at synagogues and Jewish institutions is no longer necessary. But until that day comes, we are grateful for the professionals who stand watch so our community can gather, pray, learn, and celebrate safely.
Security is a significant investment — from trained guards to the technology that supports them — one that puts a strain on our budget, but is worth every single penny.
The next time you come for services, drop off your children, attend a class, or join a community event, please take a moment to thank our guards. Their presence allows RSBI to flourish. And after Shabbat services, don’t hesitate to bring them some goodies from the Oneg Room.
